An Overview of Thrust Bearings

indiaskf6

Capable of rotating right along with the parts of the machine, SKF thrusts bearings are primarily designed to support an axial load of both, the horizontal and vertical shafts, in low-speed applications. They assist the rotational movement of the moving parts in a machine, which glide along the bearing as they rotate.

What is a Thrust Bearing?

A thrust bearing, also known as an axial bearing, has two race rings, a set of rolling elements, and, in certain cases, also includes a cage to keep the rolling elements in place. Based on the type of rolling element used in the bearing, these can broadly be classified as thrust ball bearings, which deliver high performance, and thrust roller bearings, which offer high load carrying capacities.

1. Thrust Ball Bearings

Thrust ball bearings are designed to withstand axial loads generated by shaft rotation and should not be subjected to radial loads. They come in two types - single-direction and double-direction thrust ball bearings.

2. Tapered Thrust Roller Bearings

Tapered roller thrust bearings can handle heavy axial and peak loads. The bearings are extremely rigid and take up very little axial space.

3. Spherical Thrust Roller Bearings

Spherical roller thrust bearings include asymmetrical rollers and carefully constructed raceways. The bearings can tolerate axial loads operating in only one direction as well as radial loads acting in both directions, at the same time.

4. Cylindrical Thrust Roller Bearings

Cylindrical roller thrust bearings can withstand high axial and impact loads. They cannot be exposed to radial loads.

Benefits of Using Thrust Bearings

Thrust ball bearings offer several advantages, which make them essential components in a wide range of applications. Some of their benefits include:

● High reliability

● Significant load capacity

● Ability to withstand severe conditions

● Simple installation and disassembly

● Availability of various types to meet a variety of requirements

● Low friction generation

● Low heat generation

A lot of care must be taken when choosing thrusts bearings to ensure efficient operations. Factors like the type of application, direction of load, the size of the bearing required, the material used to make the bearing, and so on must be considered to choose the right type of thrust bearing.
